The upcoming MCU Phase 4 series, 'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier' on Disney+ continues the journey of Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) after the events of 'Avengers: Endgame'.
While Marvel has played the cards close to its chest by divulging as little details as possible, Sebastian Stan, via the Men's Health December edition, gave the world an idea of his training program to play the character.
After his first appearance in 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier', Stan's Barnes was seen next in 'Captain America: Civil War' and then in 'Avengers: Infinity War' and 'Endgame'.
Talking about the training, he said: "I was so insecure being around these massive f**king guys, so I started lifting really heavy and ate a lot. I remember I showed up, and I was a little bit bigger than I had been in 'The Winter Soldier'. The arm [the metal arm in the film] was a bit tight,” he says. "I was losing circulation."
Stan's trainer was Don Saladino, the man famous for getting Ryan Reynold's jacked up when he trained for 'Deadpool' and MH gave a sample workout of what Bucky's training template looked like while he prepped to sculpt the arms beneath the winter soldier's full-metal prop.
The workout included knee bar long curls, close-grip push-ups, floor double-skullcrusher to double JM press, spider curl 21s, standing hammer curl and half-iso alternating kickback — twice a week for 3 x 12 reps.
Recent posters too show a change in Stan's avatar. Not only is he clean-shaven, but he's also got a new costume to boot that subtly reveals the jacked physique he hides beneath.
While much of the focus is naturally on his co-star Mackie, these news tidbits give valuable insight about his meticulous preparation to play the iconic Marvel character.
'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier' is set to arrive in the Fall of 2020.
